The various technological advances made over the years have become integrated within our everyday lives, and they help simplify our lifestyles. The idea of renting a movie is different than it was 20 years ago. Now, anyone can freely choose from a wide variety of services to watch movies and TV shows. You can even watch them on your phone, computer, any modern gaming console, and many mobile tablets.
Oh yeah… and you can watch them anywhere you want! Well, anywhere with WiFi or 3G at least.
In the early ’90s, when we were beginning to wonder what the next big technological evolution in entertainment would be, our VHS libraries were rapidly replaced with DVDs (invented and developed by Philips, Sony, Toshiba, and Panasonic).
As a result, our entertainment libraries shrunk as we updated ourselves by investing in DVD collections. That meant no more clunky, heavy, wooden furniture to go along with a boxy television.
The computer age is now making even bigger jumps, investing in the growth in usage of the digital devices. Our DVDs are being replaced by condensed video files to instantly stream over the internet. DVDs are still worthy of market value. Blu-Ray, Ultraviolet, and digital copies are often available alongside the physical media.
Now we have a variety of video streaming services that have options for rental. Whether it’s a physical copy from Redbox, Blockbuster, or Netflix; an unlimited 48-hour stream through Amazon Instant Video, freely streaming TV show episodes through Hulu and movies on Crackle, or renting video games from Gamefly, the options are readily available for anyone to use.
I’ve created the ultimate analysis of the online movie streaming, DVD, and video game industry within the United States in the below infographic:
